Saskatoon Berries

15.00

Features: Saskatoon berries look extremely similar to blueberries but are bright red on the inside. They are not juicy like huckleberries, raspberries, etc. and are instead starchy. What they lack in juiciness they make up for in flavor, exhibiting bright though non-acidic sweetness with a light nutty almond flavor. Despite their looks Saskatoon berries are actually more closely related to the apple family.

Species: Amelanchier alnifolia

Origin: Within a triangle connecting Oregon, Alaska, and North Dakota

Flavor Profile: Sweet and starchy with very low acidity, like a ripe blueberry but a flavor exclusive to Saskatoons.

Season: Early July to August

Purchasing Options:  Sold in 5 pound bags, fresh or frozen (depending on the season)
